Received: 23 July 2008 Revised: 1 October 2008 Accepted: 6 October 2008 Abstract We outline a Punctuated Socio-Technical Information System Change model. The model recognizes both incremental and punctuated socio-technical change in the context of information systems at multiple levels – the work system level, the building system level, and the organizational environment. It uses sociotechnical event sequences and their properties to explain how a change outcome emerged. The critical events in these sequences correspond to gaps in socio-technical systems. By conceiving information system (IS) change as a multi-level and punctuated sequence of socio-technical events, IS researchers can conceive plausible and accurate process explanations of IS change outcomes, including IS failures. Such explanations are located in the middle range and thus avoid the highly abstract and stylized closed-boxed factor models of change, but go beyond the idiographic open box histories of singular change processes. Punctuated Equilibrium, Process Models and Information System Development and Change: Towards a Socio-Technical Process Analysis

We view information system development (ISD) and change as a socio-technical change process in which technologies, human actors, organizational relationships and tasks change. We outline a punctuated socio-technical change model that recognizes both incremental and dynamic and abrupt changes during ISD and change. The model identifies events that incrementally change the information system as w...

The Socio-Technical Change And Psic Models As Lenses To View Three Consecutive Public Sector Is Projects

The object of this qualitative study was to use Leavitt’s (1965) socio-technical change model and the Punctuated Socio-technical Information systems Change (PSIC) model proposed by Lyytinen and Newman (2008) as twin approaches to illustrate three closely related large Information Systems (IS) projects called Tango I, Tango II and Tango III that were implemented and developed by two consortia of...

The evolution of process models in IS research: from a punctuated social process model to a socio-technical process model

The implementation of information technology and its association with organizational change has been an important theme in the Information Systems (IS) literature over the past 30 years. The progression of variance and process theories provide an in-depth overview of the emergence of richer accounts of IS change. In this paper we chronicle the evolution of process models and related theory. We ...

The COR Model for Analyzing Information Systems Change

Today’s world is one of rapid and constant change. Computer-based information systems, as integral components of our businesses and personal lives, must change and adapt to maintain their effectiveness.
